Rock A Bye Baby

We have all heard the lullaby, and likely sung it more times than we can begin to count.

Rock a bye baby on the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock,
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
And down will come baby, cradle and all.

The rhyme is believed to have first appeared in print in Mother Goose’s Melody (London c. 1765), and which was reprinted in Boston in 1785. No copies of the first edition are known to still exist, but a 1791 edition has the words this way

Hush-a-by baby on the tree top,
When the wind blows the cradle will rock;
When the bough breaks the cradle will fall,
Down tumbles baby, cradle and all.

Either way you want to read it, the words are rather dark to be singing to a baby, tho it is far from the only dark tale we tell infants !
