It is not often that we miss a day of blog post, and today was almost one of them. This week has been quite hectic in RL, and the heat has been atrocious. Our thermometer at the house read a high of 105 here today which for the 1st of June is nearly unheard of. Tomorrow is supposed to be yet another scorcher before the rain moves in and the temps drop back down to the 70’s and we can not wait !

More Than Just Green

Fun little greenhouse fact for you today.

The Roman emperor Tiberius, had a mysterious illness that the experts said that eating a cucumber every day would cure. While this was easy enough during the warmer months, the winter made it a bit difficult to grow the miracle cure.

The first thing they tried was to plat the cucumbers in wheelbarrows and push them out into the sunshine during the day, and bring them back inside at night. The trouble with this was that they still were not getting enough heat and still died, leaving the poor emperor with no cuke!

They then decided to try covering the plants with oiled cloth and thin sheets of transparent selenite or gypsum, which then evolved into entire buildings being made using those as the roofing material.

The Koreans also developed a concept called ondol from 1438 to 1450. This was a method of underfloor heating, and they grew mandarin oranges together with other plants. Heating from the bottom and not the top !

One of the phrases that gets said quite often when we are talking with Troy, about past events and situations that we have been through, before we were together is “and all the bad, lead us here to each other.” There are many phrases that sound quite cliche but the reason they are said as often as they are, is because there is so much truth in them. Another favorite is “We had to go through so much shit to get here because it takes a lot of fertilizer to grow something good.”

The Cedar Haven home from HISA is a cabin lovers haven. Tucked in with some aspen and beech trees it nestles beautifully into its surroundings.

Old Made Modern

When we rezzed the Noveny – Modern Concrete House, Troy’s first response was ” This reminds me of one of those old school Linden Homes, only way nicer “. Have to admit, it is quite true. The old original Linden Homes attempted to offer a modern style home only they dropped the ball and they ended up being rather bland generic boxes. They have stepped up the game with these new Linden Homes tho, so they have redeemed themselves on that.

We will fully admit, that we are torn when it comes to modern homes. We love the design and layouts that tend to be quite clean lined, we wobble on the clean appearance. The standard white walls feel quite stark to us, but we know many people who prefer just that aesthetic.

We were so overjoyed to see the latest release from Jian for Uber of Jack Russel Terriers ! Our family is rather fond of Irish Jacks, which are bred to have shorter legs.

Maddie and Henry belong to our grandmother.
