Sunrise or Sunset

When looking at an image, how do you tell if you are looking at a sunset or a sunrise ?

Short answer is, without additional information, you can’t. If you are familiar with the location in the image, and can have a general sense of what direction the image was taken/painted from, then you can more likely make a better guess than if you don’t. If the image includes a notable landmark, you could discern the direction based on that landmark. If you know a particular house faces east, you are not going to see the sun rising in the background, as that would be the west, for example.

In general terms, sunrises tend to comprise of gentler colors of light pinks and lavenders as well as peaches. Sunsets would include bolder and richer shades of red, orange and pink. This is not by any means consistently true, but in general terms. The reasons being on the scientific spectrum.

At sunrise generally the air is cooler, and there is less dust and particulates in the atmosphere, thus giving the suns light less to refract. Less particulates, less color. Alternately, at sunset, the sky has been warmed all day long and has more dust and particulates to give bolder and deeper coloring.

Holding On To Summer

There are two major players in the debate on when summer starts and ends. Team astronomical summer vs. team meteorological summer.

Team astronomical calendar insists that the start and end dates of any season are based on the changing position of Earth in relation to the sun, generally regarded as equinoxes and solstices. In the Northern Hemisphere spring ends and summer starts on the June solstice, which occurs every year between June 20 and June 22. Summer ends and autumn starts on the September equinox, which occurs every year between September 21 and 24. In the Southern Hemisphere summer lasts from the December solstice (December 20 to 23) to the March equinox (March 19 to 21).

Team meteorological summer define seasons based on climatic conditions and the annual temperature cycle. Team meteorological summer is a rather scientific team, and prefer to compare these changes based on a more consistent timetable. The length of the astronomical seasons varies between 89 and 93 days while the meteorological calendar is fixed. Winter has 90 days (91 in a leap year). Spring and summer each get 92 days leaving autumn 91 days. This generally translates to the Northern Hemisphere experiencing summer from June 1 – August 31. The Southern Hemisphere would mark summer from December to February.

Most of North America and Europe are team astronomical calendar, while Australia and New Zealand are team meteorological calendar. There are some areas where a third team comes into play which would be the cultural calendar. Traditional Chinese and Celtic calendars place the June solstice in the middle of summer, while the United States culturally considers the summer season to be Memorial Day (last Monday of May) and Labor Day (First Monday of September).

A Light Meal

This may be one of our favorite recent scenes. The feel of an open patio, an ocean breeze keeping things cool enough to enjoy the air without being too cool and chilling the meal. Someplace, somewhere, but where ?

Let The Light In

As we mentioned a few weeks back, we have not been writing along with our posts because of all the things we have been dealing with in RL, finding words to go with them was mentally draining. We were trying to work through and cope with our grandmother suffering a second stroke, which put her into a very rapid downward spiral. This is the woman that raised us, and was our best friend.

It has been a week today since we promised her we were going to be okay, and that it was safe for her to let go because no one was going to let her fall. She went very shortly after we spoke those words, holding the hand of our Pop, her husband of 46 years. When I say that this past week has been the longest month and the shortest day we have ever known, there really is no way to express it any other way. In some ways this first week without her, has felt like a never ending road of ” Doing the things, not thinking about the things”. Detachment and distraction were our go to tools, we are quite good at using them. It also feels strange to sit here and think that it has been a full week, and wondering how it has been that long already. Most of that comes from the detachment, losing track of time but not losing time.

We survived this week, and we will survive the next one, and the ones after that. We know there are going to be times that really really suck, and we know there are going to be more and more times when we don’t measure how long we have been without her, We will find a new normal, and let more light in than dark.

Patio Party

One of my most favorite things about Dictatorshop is the size of their collections, and that each piece in the collection is styled and textured to mix and match with every other piece in that collection, as well as other collections should you wish to. The newly expanded Breeze collection proves this point to a tee with todays post.
